Fernando Pessoa, demiurge of disquite: Ricardo Reis, between the sun and the black hole

Abstract

Pessoa’s heteronymy is not merely a literary device but the inauguration of an
original philosophical cosmos. This essay considers that cosmos through two poles:
Alberto Caeiro (the Sun), who embodies an immediate adhesion to sensuous existence,
and Faust (the black hole), who experiences thought vertiginously. Between solar
fullness and speculative vertigo, Ricardo Reis inhabits the interval: he knows that
Fate and death are inexorable, yet instead of surrendering to despair, he turns poetic
creation into the gesture that allows him to endure the tension. It is in this movement
that the philosophical originality of Pessoa’s work resides: thinking and existing are not reconciled in a synthesis but transformed into a continuous creative impulse. Disquiet ceases to be a psychological state and becomes an ontological condition and a demiurgic force. In so doing, Pessoa’s poetic-philosophical experience challenges the field of philosophy itself, suggesting that literary creation may constitute a legitimate path — irreducible to conceptual discourse — for elaborating questions that thought alone cannot resolve.
