Cruel muses: Sphinxes, Siris and Alexas, or how to capture a woman's voice
Main Article Content
Abstract
The article explores issues of language based on contemporary thinkers responsible for critically engaging with Aristotle’s theory of language, a phallocentric legacy that has had a vast influence on Western culture. In presenting these readings, I propose that the alienation of women from the philosophical and political scene, which appears in the Greek philosopher’s work, relates to the distorted views of patriarchy regarding female discursivity, reverberating, in this sense, in various representations of women’s voices as inadequate and/or meaningless. I intend to defend the hypothesis that this hijacked discourse returns as incorporeal and machinic in the gender performance of so-called digital personal assistants, with their programmed and domesticated voices. The text also analyzes two works of contemporary art, the robot Orlnöide, the AI version of the artist ORLAN, and the lecture-performance “001001100111 yes, sir!” by Carolina Nóbrega.
